Center of Mirror Lake

Center of Mirror Lake

This is from the middle of Mirror Lake in Yosemite. Mirror Lake was never a lake but a wide pool along Tenaya Creek. It is now mostly filled with silt. It also was bone dry during our Halloween visit. I could not resist a shot from the center. You can see how rushing rapids in the spring time have carved this boulder.

Daylight Savings Time

Tonite, I was walking to my car from the train around 6PM. With daylight savings time, it was now pitch dark. Given there is no parking, I have to walk about 1/2 mile to the overflow parking lot wheeling my briefcase with laptop behind me. I also am feeling pressured because I am taking a photo class and need to turn in (5) images showing repetition. So, I haul out my camera to try for some images (hand-held). Of course, it starts to pour. This is the edge of the parking lot with my car and it had been pouring for a while. I was drenched. So, I took this shot. I had my little 50mm lens opened at f/3.2 and ISO 3200. Given I was using one hand and trying to shield the lens, I ripped off 4 images in a row. This was the sharpest but does not really show the sheets of rain pouring down on me.

Lunchtime Drive-by

Lunchtime Drive-by

Based on my portfolio class last nite, I decided to go with a drive-by portfolio. Now, the drive-bys are not as popular as the traditional landscapes with the group, but I realized I do want to do the drive-by portfolio. So today, I was working at home and Chip is home in time for us to eat lunch together. I talked him into driving me down to Santa Clara just so I can photograph for my portfolio. What an odd twist. "No, Chip do not slow down — I need to take a shot!"

Last nite, I brought work prints of all my Yosemite images (at least those processed). For an 8 minute window, we passed the prints around the room. I just asked for checks on images that folks liked. The results were very interesting. This one almost everyone liked. The Drive-By series was not as popular as my classic landscapes but I think I may make a portfolio out of them anyway. Later, I found of the subset of folks who liked them that they invoked a strong reaction.
