Mother’s Alarm Clock

Mother’s Alarm Clock

Mother is out here on vacation. She decided to try to sleep for 3 days straight. Unfortunately, she did not count on the burrowing, heat-seaking Bodie. He was under the covers until I came in. Bodie clearly thought that Maizy was an issue because it is always Maizy’s fault. Mother was rolling around saying No! Not Yet.

Traveling to Santa Fe

Mom was mugging for the camera. Our first leg of the flight to Santa Fe was a little rough. The plane was totally jammed, and Mom was frozen with the air conditioning. Then, she found out that airline blankets are not really blankets but more like an oversized hankerchief. The trip did improve.

This was taken on our New Year’s eve visit to Uvas Canyon. Although our weather has been very warm, it was cold, damp and chilling in the canyon. We had very limited time because we had to rush back for an appointment to adopt our new little dog, Maizy Girl. I was chatting on the phone with Mother today and she says "Where is my picture from Uvas Canyon?" Ok Mom. here it is. I have two different versions of this photo. One is smiling and the other is frowning. I posted the smiling version.

This is another from Sunol of New Year’s Day. Mother and I met up with Doug and Aphra. Together we hiked out to Little Yosemite. I detoured along the way to visit my favorite tree and Mother’s favorite. On the way, Mother did not know which tree I was talking about. When we approached, she says "Oh, the magic tree". It is actually a Live Inland Oak. It is up on the bank of the creek but when the creek is really flowing some water and boulders get deposited around it.

This is the entrance to the Crocker Galleria. This is close to my office and I come here for lunch all the time.

This morning, I had a mother moment. She looked at this image. Asked where it came from, etc. Then she says "Wow, you are getting weird on this Modern kick." Actually, I agree because I have no idea where this current kick will end. Then, Mother says "Very interesting… Yes, very interesting, but I do not like it. Did you hear me, I do not like it." Thanks, Mom. I kind of agree by the way. This is an iffy one that I posted because I am running out of material again.

Accidental Self-Portrait

This is another from my baby-steps into black and white film photography. I was upstairs in the Borders bookstore in Santana Row. I noticed the palm fronds outside the window and thought — hmmm maybe a good black and white photo. Instead here I am gripping the camera (in bad form because my left-hand is not cradling the lens) appearing through the blurry fronds. I was using manual focus and I am not sure what I thought was sharp. I am using my favorite 50mm f/1.4 lens which is my default lens when I need lightweight, fast, etc.

On a digital technique note, I tried simulating the creamy effects of a cold head enlarger using Noise Ninja. Actually, I have never been in a wet darkroom and did not know what that meant but I do like the effect. For all the details, check out Doug Plummer’s Dispatches.

On the humorous side, I spoke to Mother this morning. She has already called my B&W film adventure ’stupid’. For any B&W photographers reading this posting, please do not take offense, just remember that she does not really know anything about photography. Well, she saw yesterday’s post and said "I guess it is pretty enough if you could just add some color."

Hibiscus Blossoms

Another from the archives. Today, I went out and shot my first roll of B&W film. I wanted to do a little ’chimping’ on the preview the entire time and of course there was no preview on my film camera body. I am going to drop off the roll tomorrow and should see them tomorrow evening. Whether or not I post depends on how it turns out. For my first outing, I hope that I end up with one postable image out of 36.

When I told my mother that I had purchased a new film camera body. She said why? I said because black and white film is different than digital color converted to B&W. I have looked at B&W prints and the range of light that B&W film can capture is about twice as big as what digital can capture. Therefore, the effect is very different. Next, she talked to Chip. When he said that she would have to wait to see the my first film efforts. She says "Dorothy bought a film camera! Why!". Sigh. Sometimes, mother just does not listen.
